Owen participated in a 3-week-long program this year called the Production and Manufacturing Institute, run and organized by a man named Wade Larson. At this program, where he spent 8 hours a day 5 days a week, he and his teammates learned to use basic hand and shop tools, how to work together as a team, problem solving, marketing, meeting deadlines, working with real companies and costumers who bought items they made, and did a basic mini-apprenticeship program in designing, creating, building, marketing, and selling items like birdhouses, fire pits, end grain cutting boards, picture frames, stools, game boards, and more- mostly out of wood.
At the end of the program the participants (students) had earned points each day as well as a small stipend. With their accumulated points they could "buy" certain items- Owen chose a Galaxy tablet. Lots of points!
